The internet is an ever changing, ever growing medium for interpersonal communications. How’s that for an impressive opening line? But what does it mean? The internet was designed from the ground up to be a place for people to talk, plain and simple. techne-eikon is an exploration of how we are doing just that on the internet today, and how we might be doing it in the future.

Since it’s inception, the internet has been designed to be a communications platform. Web 1.0 saw this through email and internet messaging. Websites didn’t really play into this idea much, as they were primarily a one way communication, me to you, for the delivery of information. Web 2.0 has seen the transformation of the website into a two way communications platform through the introduction of blogs, social sites such as MySpace and FaceBook, and collaborative wikis.

Where do we go from here?

How are we going to make our conversations more relevant and timely as the internet develops? What new and exciting technologies are looming on the horizon right now, and what do they mean to us, the communicators; the men, women and children of the future? How will we talk to each other?

I don’t have the answers, but through this blog (sooo Web 2.0!) I hope to discover the opportunities for interaction that exist in the here and now, and in the process perhaps gain a glimmer, a tantalizing glimpse of what the future may hold.

About Marc

I am passionate about Web 2.0 and Social Marketing strategies. I originally got interested in things internet way back in the mid 90’s when I was exploring the realm of offline Marketing and Advertising. The new medium of the internet had given rise to new marketing opportunities, and companies the world over were tossing out banner ads everywhere. At that time I didn’t get terribly involved in Internet Marketing, mainly because like most people, I hate banner ads. But I did keep an eye on trends and patterns in the industry, so jumping in two years ago wasn’t quite a blindfolded experience.

My current online interests are blogging, Social Marketing, and a growing fascination with online TV. No, not the “Fox News” stuff, but independent productions made by housewives, average Joe’s, and small firms that would never get a shot on the big networks. Who hasn’t dreamed of having their own TV show? With the power of the internet, it is now possible, and people are doing it. The upshot of it is that much of the shows being produced rival, or even exceed the liberally shoveled tripe the major networks are shoving down our throats on a daily basis.

I like blogging and Social marketing because, despite the cutting edge technologies involved, it is actually a return to some very old school roots, roots that reach out and touch someone. It brings customers out of the demographic spreadsheets and returns them to their rightful place as human beings. It is an age old truism that people do not buy from companies, they buy from other people. The other truism is that people do not buy products, they buy solutions to problems. Solutions are best delivered by trusted friends. In other words, people.

While I am just starting to get into it, it is my feeling that online TV will take Social Marketing and blogging to the next level by putting a face to the personality. It helps to increase the intimacy of our contact, and the trust levels. It is my feeling that video and online TV will become the mainstay of the social internet in the next few years.

Add to that the growing movement towards collaboration, and all I can think is that the future is going to be an exciting place, one that I look forward to participating in.
