Hello World! Gimme SEO optimized backlinks!
As you may be aware, when you first install Wordpress, it comes with a default sample post, which reads:
Welcome to WordPress. This is your first post. Edit or delete it, then start blogging!
As I proceed with the relaunch of techne-eikon, I have other projects on the go. Consequently, there were a couple of days after the initial install that I couldn’t get back to the site. So imagine my surprise when I opened my email this morning, only to find that somebody had left a comment on the default post!
Hi,
I am first time in this blog.I am commenting here……
Regards,
MOON

Ok, can we just take a moment, and recap this? Did I miss something?
- New blog
- Zero content
- No SEO value whatsoever.
Nope, I don’t seem to have missed anythign, so what the hell possessed this person to leave a comment on a post whose whole message is “delete me”? The only answer I can come up with is bad SEO practise. Somehow, somewhere, somebody told poor MOON that all s/he had to do to get internet riches was make a blog or site, and get tons of SEO optimized backlinks to it. And the best way to get those backlinks? Comment on blogs.
Now I am all for getting backlinks to my site, even keyword optimized backlinks, but this is a bit much if you ask me. This is a perfect example of the misuse and abuse of SEO practises. The blog is as much a discussion forum as it is a source of news and information. As such, it behoves us to actually read the post we wish to commetn on, and more to the point, leave a relevant commet, one that comtributes to the discussion.
For techne-eikon, there is a comment policy in place, though at this particular time I still need to create the written form. And comments like this are automatically deleted. Contribute to the conversation, or don’t bother commenting at all, becasue it will never see the light of day. On the other hand, if you have something to say, then I have no problem giving you a little SEO love. Works for me, works for you. Simple, yes?
Do you leave comments without reading, or at least scanning the post? What’s your comments policy on you blog? Leave a comment, and let’s discuss it.

Such spam is automated. The same technology that allows Google to index your site can be used by other clever programmers to leave comments on blogs, automatically, without the site ever being looked-over by a human being.
Akismet helps filter out this sort of thing, if you’re using Wordpress.
I think Google may have started filtering for these sorts of backlinks, but I also think that 10,000 backlinks, to a site you don’t care if it gets banned, makes commercial sense to these people.
